Second-gen slate isn’t long for this world.
Apple will phase out the iPad 2 when the iPad Mini hits retail, an industry sage predicts, as the micro-slate becomes the new budget option for would-be Apple tablet buyers.
Rob Chira, an analyst at Evercore Partners, forecasts that the Apple will call time on its second-generation slate in the name of clarifying “product tiers” for customers.
Chira’s projection comes ahead of the anticipated unveiling of a smaller iPad, which is expected to sell for around $200 compared with the iPad 2’s asking price of $400, on November 2nd.
The tablet's spec sheet is rumoured to include a 7.85-inch screen of the non-retina variety, a A5 dual-core processor and the same Lightning dock connector as the iPhone 5.
The Cupertino-based tech titan is thought to have kept the iPad Mini’s price down by dispensing with 3G support and a rear-facing camera, as well as recycling parts from earlier iPad iterations.
